Altri indicates that the ideal location for the biofactory for the production of natural fibers would be in the municipality of Palas de Rei, in the Comarca de A Ulloa, province of Lugo, in the Autonomous Region of Galicia.
The choice of this location, strategically located in the geographical center of Galicia and which could lead to a new economic dynamism, followed strict technical criteria, namely environmental, water, proximity to the forest and access to communication routes.
The biofactory, which would be built from scratch in partnership with Impulsa Galicia, a public-private consortium under Spanish law, would occupy almost 500 acres, with Altri having already guaranteed access to the land necessary for its implementation.
This unit would be equipped with the best technologies, and it is expected that it will have the capacity to produce around 200,000 tons of cellulosic-based textile fibers annually, starting initially with the production of approximately 60,000 tons of lyocell.
This industrial biounit would be able to supply the textile cluster in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, contributing to the strengthening of the circular economy and decarbonization of an important economic sector such as the textile sector.
This project, which could reach an investment of around 750 million euros, naturally fits into the “Next Generation EU” program and the Spanish National Recovery and Resilience Plan, in the context of the Proyecto de Gestión Sostenible de los Bosques Gallegos.
