Altri recognised by Time as one of the world's most sustainable companies

Altri has been included, for the second consecutive year, in the ranking of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies 2026, securing 495th place with a score of 70.87. This represents an improvement of 11.15 points compared with the 2025 ranking, reflecting the Group’s consistent progress across a wide range of ESG assessments and sustainability ratings.

The ranking is produced by the American magazine TIME in partnership with Statista and is based on a rigorous evaluation process. It begins with the selection of the 5,000 largest and most influential companies worldwide, taking into account revenue, market capitalisation and public prominence. Through a four-stage assessment process, the list is narrowed down to the 750 most sustainable companies, evaluated against more than 20 key performance indicators.

According to the ranking’s methodology, companies operating in unsustainable industries, such as fossil fuels and deforestation-related activities, are excluded. Organisations appearing on sustainability-related negative lists are also automatically disqualified, including those identified as major carbon emitters or linked to environmental disasters. These exclusion lists include the Forest 500 Report, Carbon Majors and the PERI Top 100 Polluter Indexes covering air, water, greenhouse gases, toxic greenhouse gases, suppliers and coal.

Altri was further assessed on the basis of sustainability ratings and commitments recognised by leading international organisations. Key criteria included CDP scores, participation in the United Nations Global Compact, alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (both near- and long-term targets), inclusion in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook, participation in the UNFCCC Race to Zero campaign, as well as ESG and SRI assessments conducted by MSCI.

The availability and quality of sustainability reporting were also taken into account. This included verification of the publication of an ESG report, confirmation that the report had undergone independent external assurance, and assessment of compliance with international reporting standards such as IFRS/ISSB.

In the final stage, a range of environmental and social Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were analysed using data extracted from companies’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports. Environmental metrics included emissions intensity, reductions in emissions intensity, energy intensity, the proportion of renewable energy used, waste intensity and the percentage of waste recycled. Social metrics covered areas such as gender diversity on boards and in leadership positions, gender pay gaps, workplace safety and employee turnover.

“It is particularly gratifying to see Altri recognised among the world’s most sustainable companies in a ranking that consolidates several respected sustainability ratings and assessments and is based on independent evaluations. Altri is committed to being a leading force in sustainability and to actively contributing to the creation of a more renewable world. Our 2030 Commitment sets out highly ambitious targets across all ESG dimensions, and it is encouraging to witness such positive progress year after year. As a group whose activities are rooted in forestry and the bioeconomy, we work every day to reduce our environmental footprint while helping to accelerate the decarbonisation of the economy and promote greater circularity,” said José Soares de Pina, Chief Executive Officer of Altri.

In addition to Altri, other Portuguese companies featured in the ranking include EDP Group, Jerónimo Martins Group, Sonae Group, NOS and REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais.
